Bawtry Computer
Services (BCS)
Installation
Instructions
These instructions guide you through the installation
of the BCS NEAP application software from a BCS software distribution CD.
1. Prerequisites
The BCS NEAP application requires these items:
PC
running Windows 2000 or later.
Microsoft
Database Engine (MSDE) – supplied on the CD.
Internet
access for software registration.
To make full use of the BCS NEAP application, these
items should be available:
MS
Excel 2000 or later.
IP-SAM
fonts. Please read Footnote [1]
2. Installing The
Software
Please ensure that you have “Windows Administrator
Privileges”; users who are not administrators may find that Windows security
blocks their attempts to install software.
The CD contains 2 packages:
Package
1: the NEAP application software itself.
Package
2: the BCS MSDE Administrator and Microsoft’s MSDE database software.
These instructions assume your CD drive letter is D.
If this is not the case, please substitute the
appropriate letter for your system when reading this document.
When the CD is placed in the drive, it may autoload
and display the Welcome form. If it fails to do so, run D:\Setup.exe which will
start the installation program and display the Welcome form.
2.1 Installing The NEAP Application
Software
From the Welcome form, select NEAP and follow the
instructions to install the software.
2.2 Installing The BCS MSDE
Administrator
The BCS MSDE Administrator is designed to help you
install Microsoft’s MSDE database server software and to establish the NEAP
database on the DB Server. If you already administer a database server on your
system, you may choose not to install Package 2. Please note that MSDE itself
is not
activated on your system during this stage of installation – it is simply
copied from the CD to your hard-drive; you may use BCS MSDE Administrator to
install it at step 3.
From the Welcome form, select BCS MSDE Administrator
and follow the instructions to install the software.
2.3 Exit the Installer. You may now
eject the CD.
3. Installing The
Database Server
NEAP requires the support of a database server (to
store its data). The distribution disk contains a copy of Microsoft’s
free-to-distribute database server: MSDE. Please read footnote [2]
If you do
not want to install MSDE for NEAP, please continue at step 4.
From the desktop, double-click/open the BCS MSDE
Administrator icon.
From BCS MSDE Administrator menubar, select Application à Install Software - MSDE
This runs the MSDE installation script that installs
and registers the MSDE database software.
From BCS MSDE Administrator menubar, select SQL Server à Start
This runs the MSDE database server. An icon for SQL
Server Service Manager may appear in your process tray. Henceforward, MSDE will
be started automatically every time your system is booted.
Continue with the next step or exit BCS MSDE
Administrator.
4. Creating The NEAP Database
Database
Administrators who are familiar with attaching databases to SQL Server may
elect to attach the initialised NEAP database using their own methods; in this
case, skip this step. By default, the initialised database may be found in: C:Program Files\BCS\NEAP\NEAP.bdb
If not continuing from step 3, you will need to start
the BCS MSDE Administrator: from the desktop, double-click/open the icon.
From BCS MSDE Administrator menubar, select SQL Server à Connect
On the displayed form, select SQL Server Authentication
and enter User sa and the password
you entered during the MSDE installation; and OK
If your login is successful you should now be
connected to the database server; this is reflected in the status form
displayed by BCS MSDE Administrator.
From BCS MSDE Administrator menubar, select Application à Load BCS
On the displayed form, select the NEAP database and
OK.
The NEAP database (as released) is attached to the
MSDE database server.
5. Software Activation
Having successfully installed the software, started
the database server and attached the NEAP database, there is one task
remaining: software activation.
Before you can use the NEAP software, you need to
register on-line with Bawtry Computer Services and obtain an activation key.
a. Obtain A Software Activation Key
A Software Activation Key is not only specific to the
NEAP CD you are using but is also time-constrained. You should complete this
step in a timely fashion so that the Activation Key is obtained and entered to
activate NEAP in one session.
.
Visit our web site www.bawtry.net
and from the home page follow the link to Software Registration. When you are
asked for the Media Serial Number, enter the number on the label on the NEAP CD
cover. Upon successful registration, you will be given an Activation Key.
b. Activate NEAP
From the desktop, double-click/open the BCS Activation
icon.
From BCS Activation menubar, select Action à Activate Application
On the BCS Activate Application form:
Select
Enter:
your name, your organisation’s name
(these are
free format fields but must be at least 4 characters)
Enter:
the media serial number you gave to obtain the Activation Key.
Enter:
the Activation Key obtained at step 5.1.
Select
OK to activate the software.
6. Conclusion
Congratulations! You have completed the installation
process.
To use NEAP: from the desktop, double-click/open the
BCS NEAP icon.
Note
that on first use, you will see the login form to connect to the database
server. Please enter your user id (e.g. sa) and password; these must match the values you gave when
installing MSDE. You may also need to enter the name of the database server and
the name of the NEAP database on that server; in most cases the defaults
“(local)” and “NEAP” will work. If you don’t want to repeat login each time you
run NEAP, then check the Remember
Password? box and uncheck the Always show this form? box. You can always redisplay the
login form using: Application à Server Login.
You might like to use the preferences form in NEAP to
customise some aspects of the software operation.

[2] You
don’t have to use MSDE. Instead you may use Microsoft’s SQL
Server Express, which superseded MSDE and is free to download from Microsoft’s
web site. Alternatively, you may use Microsoft’s SQL Server software. Whichever
database you use, the version of NEAP distributed on this CD is a single-user
implementation and requires the database server to be installed on the same
client system as NEAP itself. In other words, this version of NEAP will not
connect across a network to a database server running on another system.
